ABOUT US

OBGL is the renovated original 9-hole course of Bandon built in 1927 as Westmost Golf Course.  Enjoy our scenic beauty and challenge at the most reasonable rate in the area!

Old Bandon Golf Links, formerly operated as Bandon Face Rock Golf Course, is presently leased and operated by Troy & Kim Russell.  Troy, with his extensive golf course construction and maintenance experience, was called in the fall of 2008 to assist owners Margaret Miller and Jerry Brown in returning the course to playable condition after not having been maintained for 16 months.  Out of that effort grew the idea to lease the course, which opened under the new name and management in March 2009.

Troy has a BS in Horticulture with emphasis in Turfgrass Management from Oregon State University, graduating in 1995.  He was with the JR Simplot Company prior to his 10 years with Bandon Dunes, and has been on the construction team or acting Construction Project Manager on numerous courses including the OGA Course at Tukwila, Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails, Tetherow, in Bend, OR and Wine Valley in Walla Walla, WA.

Troy has volunteered on many major tournament maintenance crews; The PGA Championship at Sahalee CC; The US Open at Pebble Beach, Olympia Fields, Shinnecock Hills, Torrey Pines; The Open at St. Andrews Old Course, 2000 & 2005; Presidents Cup in S. Africa; Walker Cup at Chicago Golf Club; the Curtis Cup at Bandon Dunes, and three Masters Tournaments:  2002, 2003, and 2010.  He is presently Immediate Past President of the Northwest Turfgrass Association.

Troy brings his experience and love of the game together with his family to return an old Bandon icon to it's community.  Featuring links conditioning, family rates, and clubhouse ammenities to suit every player.

Troy was invited to be on the paid staff for the 2010 Masters Tournament in Augusta.  Of course, he accepted and had a great time.  He loves those "working vacations!"  This was his third Masters and his 10th Major tournament-crew experience.

So, keep in mind that this course is now in the hands of someone who is a trusted maintenance staffer at Augusta National for The Masters, using that same education, background, and love for the game to create an affordable, quality golf experience at Old Bandon Golf Links.

Hickory Golf
Troy's passion for golf and its roots led him to purchase his own set of antique hickory clubs years ago.

This respect for the history of the game gave Troy the idea to offer this opportunity to similarly-minded golfers -- to play a course designed during the days of Harry Vardon and Bobby Jones, with clubs from those two distinct eras.  A time when the game was changing rapidly.  In Vardon's day, the club faces were not grooved and they played with a solid, moulded gutta percha ball.  Within 25 years there were grooved club faces and wound rubber core balls.  Thus we have club sets from the 1880's and the 1920's from which our guests may choose.

In the effort to aquire these additional clubs, Troy contacted Chris McIntyre of Play Hickory (playhickory.com).  We are very pleased to be offering rental clubs and balls from this premier antique golf event company.

While we have 6 sets each of the 1880's equipment and the 1920's equipment, Play Hickory coordinates antique golf tournaments nationwide.  If you would like to arrange a hickory tournament at your home course, contact Chris.  For more information visit his website:  http://www.playhickory.com

We have found that groups tend to enjoy the experience more so than individuals, where match-play may be accommodated rather than playing against one's own modern-day handicap.  For this reason.

Leave your ego behind with that current handicap and enjoy an amazing, back-to-basics round with Hickory Golf and a few good friends.

About our logo
Bandon's Face Rock (above, back left) has been the local icon, complete with indian maiden legend, since before the formation of the town in the mid-1800's.  It is traditional for golf courses to use local or regional geographic icons for their representation.  To remain true to the history of the golf course and the region, we have the image of Face Rock coupled with two hickory shafted clubs, as our logo for Old Bandon Golf Links.  Face Rock Wayside is a State Park, located just north of our course on Beach Loop Drive.
